How pre-Hispanic remains became the “cultural” property of the nation

Historians of Mexico have shown that pre-Hispanic ruins have not always been claimed as Mexico’s national heritage, or been subject to laws framing ancient indigenous monuments and artefacts as the inalienable property of the nation (Brading 1985; López Caballero 2008; Bueno 2010, 2016). Patrimonio legislation has evolved over time to produce pre-Hispanic material culture as intrinsically linked to national identity, crafting a relatively recent separation between these material remains imagined as having “cultural” value and other kinds of patrimonial things, substances, and places legally defined as “nature” or “natural” kinds of resources.
